What I've been doing for the cable panel on the sweater I'm knitting is using one color (green) of stitch markers to mark the edges of the cable panel, and a second color that I move row by row, whose distance from the starting edge of the panel (I'm right-handed so knit right-to-left, thus for me it's the right edge) indicates the row count.
At least that's how I was doing it at first. Now that I "understand" how the center cable panel works I'm using the second color (lavender) to mark the offset for the side cables, which otherwise I was having trouble keeping in sync with each other.
