Silver, whether it's solid or plate, is EXPENSIVE. Don't give it away, except to a very good friend or loved relative. Sell it.

My mom buys loose silver at auctions and uses it as day to day flatware. She flings it into the dishwasher with everything else. If you use silver constantly, it doesn't tarnish. I don't know if the dishwasher harms it.
