Okay, the swift looks like this:
and you use it (among other possibilities) to hold a skein of yarn while winding it onto a ball, like this:
If you don't have one, you get someone else, in my case my spouse, to hold the skein, like this:
a process that should look as graceful as this:
but actually ends up a lot more like this:
