The upstairs A/C has failed. It was busily running the fan yesterday, even desperately so, but not cooling at all. Was 92 up there. Was 89 when we finally went to bed. I had all the ceiling fans running, and we tried opening windows, since it was marginally cooler outside. I had a miserable night. I kept waking up, and I could tell I'd been grinding my teeth in my sleep [1].

At 5 am I gave up. Rousted selenite out of bed, I took a quick cool shower, and got him and the babies downstairs. He's gone back to sleep on the comfy chair, the babies are on a comforter on the floor. He said Brendan was too heavy, and let him sleep, if he's too hot he'll wake up. I'm not sure if that's true, and am debating trying to carry him down myself.

The A/C repair guy is supposed to come this afternoon sometime. I really hope he can fix it. If not, I'm going to lay down sleeping bags and comforters to make the best pad in the living room I can, and sleep down here tonight. The a/c down here works, it is soooo much cooler.


[1] Sigh, so overdue for dental work. *not* going to screw up the nursing relationship with Jamie at this age, though, and you can't nurse right after dental work, so will cope as long as I can. But when Jamie weans, I suspect there will be a HUGE dental bill. I figure one of the most important reasons for birth control right now is to make *sure* I get the window after Jamie weaning to have the dental work done.

There is a dingus at the local Sav-on and/or Rite Aid called "The Doctor's Nightguard." It is a rubber/plastic dam that one can form-fit to one's teeth that will save one the money for having a custom dam made by a dentist (usually $300 to $400). It costs about $20, IIRC. I am not a grinder, instead, I clench my jaw and over-stress my facial muscles when I'm upset about something.

Stops teeth grinding in your sleep instantly. Yeah, you can still do the grinding while you're sleeping, however, the dam keeps the teeth from touching each other, hence preventing grinding damage.

Um, forgive my ignorance, but...

You can't nurse after dental work? That's news to me! Whyever not? Anaesthesia issues, or what?

A friend of mine has one of the custom ones, to keep her from grinding. (Apparently if they're not fine-tuned, they can be painful, from her blog and LJ.) If there's a cheaper one that might halt further damage, sounds like a good idea to me.

ah, darn it, I don't have any of the references at hand...

Dental work can disturb mercury fillings, and release heavy metals into the bloodstream, and from thence, into the milk.

I have a number of mercury fillings - insert rant and obscenities about awful cheap dentist in Lompoc, and damn I wish I'd known enough then, and he did a rotten job anyway. And it is quite possible that heavy metals are a trigger for autism, as well as a possible trigger to other problems. And I have a family history of autism, and of many autoimmune diseases, and do NOT want to risk any possible triggers for Jamie. And since yanking and replacing some of those mercury fillings is part of what I suspect needs doing - no, it's going to have to wait.

I suspect anesthesia might be a problem, too, but I suspect that's going to depend on who you ask. Which is just typical with nursing. Mostly people don't know, so some doctors seem to tell you automatically that you can't nurse - they'd rather screw up a kid and a family by making the mother wean than actually try to figure anything out. Fegh. I don't know.

There's also the point that this type of work is going to take Many Hours, there's going to be a LOT that needs to get done - I last had dental work done well before I got pregnant with Maggie, and was supposed to get a bunch more done then, but when I tried to go back the good dentist (who *listened* to me about me having a high tolerance for the anesthesia) was gone on maternity leave, and then before I figured anything else out I got pregnant. Anyway, I can't be away from Jamie for Many Hours at this point. We can manage about 3 or 4 occasionally, max. And I don't have anybody to take care of the kids for multiple long dentist sessions.

I'm really wondering if I could fall asleep with something like that in my mouth. I know I ended up not using my retainer post-braces as a kid because I could not fall asleep with that in my mouth.

A/C got fixed. Yay.

I don't know how many more babies we want to have, probably at least one, we'll have to see.

And yes, that's me sounding a bit defensive about it. I don't see any reason we shouldn't have more if we want to. That's part of why we moved away from LA, to be somewhere we could have a big family. I'm the only descendent of my great-grandmother of this generation who'll be reproducing, it's not like I'm going to produce the theoretical 16.

Why be defensive? I think its great that ya'll can and will do that, if we had the ability (read: money and non-reproductive problems) we probably would. Besides that, you seem like a natural to be a mommy and you make some awfully cute babies!! : )

I tend to get defensive - I find so many people who seem to think I'm nuts to have kids at all, and even more who assume that of course nobody would want more than 2.

Heck, I figure go for economy of scale - if I'm going to put my ego on hold for 20 years anyway, might as well go ahead and do it for 22 or 24 and have more kids to show for it! ;-)

Plus if I can't figure out how to make local friends, and thereby can't teach the kids how to do it, at least they'll have siblings to play with...

I so thought you were going to say something else like 'I can't figure out how to make any local friends so why not make babies', I'm so laughing at myself for thinking you were going to say that!! :)
