Okay, downside to Texas.

I was going to order some very nice mead, the same kind I'd ordered before when I lived in California. No problem, I'm home during the day to sign for it. Turns out Texas isn't one of the states where you can order alcohol online. In fact, very few are.

I'm extremely annoyed and trying to figure out how to get around this. Driving to Wisconsin is out. Neither my parents or Karl's live in a state that can. Fegh. Very Bad Words.

Hey, are you sure we can't order it for you? You could pick it up on a trip - Thanksgiving, anyone? I know I've ordered wine from my favorite California winery by phone and had it delivered here - had to be home to sign, yes.

Is Georgia okay? If you ordered it to come here, we could turn around and ship it to you there.

Nope, Louisiana doesn't show on the list.

I think maybe I'll go to Central Market and ask if they can get it on special order - although I bet they'd want me to get a lot. :-(

Nope, no Georgia on the list. If it did, I'd so want you to. Heck, if it did, I'd order it and come pick it up. ;-)

For all that you guys are SO glad you escaped from California, hellhole of the universe... am I taking it a little personally? Maybe a little. Well anyway. You still have kindred-by-choice here, you know.

I know GA isn't on the list, bc I had the same problem when I wanted to order mead for the wedding. And I couldn't special order it either, bc it's apparently illegal to import the stuff too. I was so thoroughly annoyed--it's probably one of those old laws no one bothers to take off the books. After all, what could be particularly dangerous about fermented honey?

Let's try this - what states ARE okay?

Are there Spec's Liquor stores in the Metroplex? If they don't already have the stuff, they may well be willing to order it for you. As in: they'd get a case or whatever the minimum required purchase is, sell you the one or two bottles you want, and put the rest on the shelves. Then, if it sells, they'll just keep it in stock.

If you don't have Spec's, there might be a similar Really Huge Liquor Store With A Vast Selection that would be willing to do the same.

I just called the Central Market and spoke to their liquor guy. No. Apparently the stuff cannot be ordered in Texas AT ALL.

I am annoyed.

Well, in addition to needing someone at home to sign for it - which Jim could do - it would need someone to lug the big case to the post office, is he up for that?

Karl has been making grumbly noises about multiple shipping. He does have a point. There's also a question about could it even get shipped to us safely, would it have to be reboxed, etc. Sigh. I may decide it's too much hassle.

California is not a universal hellhole, no. But it was going to turn our lives into one. There, Brendan was in an all day special ed classroom no better than babysitting, we had no room for a new baby, no yard, and Karl was obsessively running spreadsheets to figure out how soon we were going to end up bankrupt. Here, he's mainstreamed and on honor roll, we have the house, and we hope to someday get out of debt. California works well for some, but not our situation.

We miss the people, though.

Lessee - California, Colorado, DC, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota (phone order only), Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio (permit required), Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin (location of meadery), Wyoming.

But from what the guy at Central Market said, sounds like it's not even legal to bring it in state at all if they don't have a distributor here, so I'm not sure an individual from another state could ship it to us without trouble or maybe it getting confiscated or something. Bleagh.

I think it comes down to oh well, forget that bright idea.

Damn. Because I was envisioning a big production, of getting it ordered by a DC resident, picking it up myself, flying it home with me, and driving it to you. But it's too late for that, all complications aside. :(

See, if I'd been able to organize something like that ahead of time, that could have been really cool. But it was something I thought of for some specific short term goals. Oh well.

It's really nice mead, though.
