Collegium

So we have just arrived home from Fall Collegium. Our SCA kingdom runs these fall and spring, a weekend of classes. 7 class sessions, about 12-14 classes per session, and I always want a way to be in several places at once.

We have a lovely lady who lives down there - is in fact a PhD candidate at the university that the event was held at - who is an immigrant from the Ukraine, and is very knowledgeable about Russian research, and is apprenticed to a Laurel interested in the area. She (with help from her Laurel) taught *7 classes*. The Mind Boggles. (and she's teaching them all in a 2nd language!) I managed to get to three of them.

I emailed a description to the Lois Bujold list, due to someting in her class on Russian folklore. Apparently Ivan is pronounced ee-VAHN. So now I'm trying to think of "eeVAHN, you idiot!" I was told on the list afterwards that apparently Lois pronounces it the Americanized way.

Also, it's apparently 'baba yaGA', accent on the last syllable.

Hearing her discuss Whatshisname the Deathless, with his heart/life hidden away out of his body, and thinking of Miles mentioning the tale of the mutant with his heart out of his body, definitely a Bujold moment.

I was chatting with Liudmila and Soraya after the class, to confirm the eeVAHN thing. And mentioned Bujold and the series, and that I'd have to mention it to the list. Turned out both the Laurel and apprentice are serious Bujold "must have them all" readers! Although it sounded like neither of them had realized that the other was. We discussed briefly what was coming out in the near future, I mentioned www.dendarii.com, and we rhapsodized/proselytized at the other lady who'd stayed behind.

I have also been told I need to get into Russian garb. I asked a question about how the vertical weave podniza hung, as a result of which Liudmila had me try it on. Took a look at me and Oooohed, told me I looked good in it. Mentioned I have the appropriate "buxom" frame to look good in Russian outfits. So we put the matching collar on me and I had someone take a picture. http://www.kelthaven.org/russian.html I normally think I shouldn't wear red, which is a shame since Russian clothing goes heavily for red, but they told me the burgundy color was good. If I can come up with an appropriate design, I'll start asking for pearl strings for my birthday, I suppose.

I spent a lot of last night on the computer looking at her webpage and other SCA Russian garb pages. OOOOh.

I also took Mistress Philippa's sprang class. It was fun, and much easier than I expected! I want to do a sprang bag for the Laurel/Apprentice auction at Queen's Champion, maybe another for a presentation bag for the Lyondemere Coronation gift - traditionally gas cards, phone cards, stamps. I wonder if it will be that this time or something else, since the incoming Royalty are our own local people. Maybe another for pentathalon/arts fair.

I took a class on the embroidery used in the Bayeux Tapestry stitch, and am going to be working on doing the comet as seen in the tapestry. Maybe I put that in the arts fair/pentathalon, too.

Also went to the one on Justinian and Theodora, scandals thereof - but spent most of that one out with a fussy Maggie. The brocading class also had a chunk of time taken away with feeding Maggie. That one was frustrating to me. I do NOT like metallic threads, but I have a project to do for someone that likes glittery stuff. Sigh. I'm hoping I can get brocade down well enough to do it.

Overall Maggie was great. Got a bit overstimulated by all these people. But was mostly a very easy baby to deal with.

Lady Ealasaid gave us a lovely baby quilt for her. Dragonfly fabric on one end for me, star stuff with comets on the other end for Kevin, garden fabrics for Ealasaid, bees, flowers, and oaks/acorns, and Lyondemere colors. White terrycloth for the back. Wonderful.

The whole weekend was great, and I could type all day about it, but I shan't.
