News flash - the bed is broken. Our bed's understructure collapsed under us last night at about midnight.

Now, this is just grossly unfair. You'd think if a bed was going to suddenly collapse under a couple, that we could have at least have been enjoying some serious rip-roaring wall-banging neighbor-annoying sex. But Noooo. I'd been lying there thinking that when Karl came in, I'd like to chat for a few moments in bed, then get Maggie out of her crib next to us and snuggle her in with me so she'd stay warm all night. Then Karl climbed into the bed, we started to talk, and bam.

This is getting really old. Karl's old cheap Ikea bed used to have problems and dump the mattress down, and we got rid of that in Lompoc.

When we moved to Redondo Beach we got a nice respectable sturdy bed. Or so we thought. They build the damn things sturdy-seeming, but when you actually take it apart all the weight's on three little pieces of wood in the center. Agh. I am seriously annoyed.

Also, having lived through a big earthquake out here, my heart really does NOT like the sensation of the ground (as it felt) suddenly dropping out from under me. That is not the kind of adrenaline rush I need at midnight.

We'd been having some trouble with it before the trip, and Karl'd rearranged the supports and thought it would be ok. So there we were late at night dragging the mattress into the living room so we could sleep. It's a fortunate thing I've worked so on clearing up that room to have an open play space for Maggie. Brendan seemed bemused to find it that way this morning.

Gak. I'm planning on sending an email out shortly, begging friends for help - I need someone with carpentry skills and tools to see if they can fix the bed. Failing that, we'd need help to get it taken apart and taken out to the garage. We have the SCA camp bed, which fortunately I'd insisted on having made kingsize, so we could use that - I'm just not sure it's sanded to a level suitable for being around a small baby.
Or maybe we should just put the mattress on the boxsprings on the floor. Darn it, I thought I'd gotten away from that. Would be weird with the crib next to it up higher anyway.

Sigh
