Cabaret

So Maggie didn't get a nap today, and fell asleep after dinner. We're seizing the opportunity to see Cabaret, which we'd never seen, but heard about. [livejournal.com profile] selenite got it for me on sale a while back, but we knew it wouldn't be kid safe.

So far, I'm wondering why this is supposed to be such a great movie. We're only partway through, took a break to soothe Maggie who woke up briefly. Okay, apparently a bunch of creepy characters are going to be treated badly by Nazi Germany, we can see that coming. Yeah, so? Lots of nice, non creepy people got treated badly. So far I'm having a reaction of "I don't care about these characters." [livejournal.com profile] selenite points out that Michael York's character seems to be our token nice guy, but I said he seems so bland and ineffective so far. He's referring to Minelli's character as "Pathological Liar Girl". Anyway, he wants to stick with it at least a while to get some of the more famous songs as reference. Okay by me.

It's SO Fosse in the choreography, yes. Looking at the odd makeup and the carefully schooled utter lack of facial expression on most of these actors, it seems as if the director was working to make sure we felt no sympathy or attachment for them. Odd.

Glancing at IMDB while [livejournal.com profile] selenite makes us some cookies. (Why yes, I do have a marvelous hubby) Hm, many of the people praising it hate most musicals, whereas I usually enjoy them. I suspect they're going at movies from a very different place than I do.

Not like I dislike Fosse or anything. It was my insistence on showing a filmed version of Pippin to [livejournal.com profile] selenite that got us started mentioning other Fosse stuff, and that we hadn't seen Cabaret. He picked up a copy of All That Jazz (which I'd also rented and shown him, saw that at entirely too young and impressionable an age, at the same time as Cabaret.

Well, maybe it gets better.
