Challah!

Today I am baking challah. I just felt like it. I'm in a cooking and baking kind of mood. Some of this is that [livejournal.com profile] selenite is away at A-Kon, so I'm making the family recipes that I love and he doesn't like, because they have mushroom soup in them. Last night I made Ham Carolina. And brownies with walnuts. I have another recipe planned for tonight.

The challah dough is now rising, in the lovely wooden dough bowl that my parents [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver and [livejournal.com profile] rlseiver gave us for our anniversary. I'm very pleased with it.

Sadly for Jamie, the recipes do seem to be egg heavy. Ham Carolina of course has eggs in it, and is served on top of cornbread, made with eggs. So he can't have any. And challah is an egg bread with an egg glaze. But I *want* it! So I'm making some.

Hopefully I'll get time to make regular bread later this week.

I am fond of the family's challah recipe.

I just found this on [livejournal.com profile] telynor's page, and I *LIKE* it.
We now have cultural machines so powerful that one singer can reach everybody in the world, and make all the other singers feel inferior because they're not like him. Once that gets started, he gets backed by so much cash and so much power that he becomes a monstrous invader from outer space, crushing the life out of all the other human possibilities. My life has been devoted to opposing that tendency.— A. Lomax
I don't know who A. Lomax is. I suppose I should go google zir now.

A toast to filking! And singing in general. I've been singing a lot in the car with the kids lately, not having gotten other good opportunities to sing. I was hoping to do a singing part in church next month, but it looks like that's getting taken away as the music director is doing new music and wants the experienced singers to have it. Oh well. I will just keep singing on my own.

UPDATE: According to Wikipedia - "Alan Lomax (January 31, 1915 – July 19, 2002) was an important American folklorist and musicologist. He was one of the great field collectors of folk music of the 20th century, recording thousands of songs in the United States, Great Britain, the West Indies, Italy, and Spain."

Marvelous. A toast to him!
