celticdragonfly: (Wimsey - string - perfectly simple if yo)
Thanks for those that gave me encouraging words the other day on the homeschooling problems. I posted to [livejournal.com profile] gallagher_gpa what we're doing to regroup.

I think I'll repost the knitting content here, though:

I had tried to teach her to knit, and had not gotten that far - she could participate, but didn't get it well enough to do on her own. Then yesterday [livejournal.com profile] patgund pointed me to a pattern at Knitty, so I realized the spring issue was up, and went to poke through it - and found this page on spool and loom knitting. Now, I'll admit I'm normally something of a knitting snob about those. Sure, if that's what you want to do, fine, but to me they're not really *real* knitting. But I figured maybe I need to bend a bit - if that let Maggie learn at least that level, and gave her hands-on stuff she enjoyed, it would be good.

So yesterday on the way to movie night we stopped at Hobby Lobby, much to Maggie's excitement. We got a Clover Wonder Knitter, and a skein of TLC acrylic yarn in a light blue/dark blue stripe.

I'm glad we did. She took to it. I set up the first inch or so, then showed her how to go, and she just went. "This is knitting school!" she'd say. She's done a couple of feet since then. Last night she was getting silly about it, having the ball of yarn halfway across [livejournal.com profile] fordprfct's dining room from where she was sitting, and making a bit of a mess with it. This morning she got it back out on her own and started back up.

She was a bit upset when the part with the mess came out of the spool this morning, and she had to show me, all upset about it. I attempted to reassure her - it's part of the learning curve, it's okay, don't worry about it, it'll be fine.

Not sure what all we'll DO with it - I can figure out that we can spiral stitch it around and make doll rugs for her, or maybe back-and-forth and make doll blankets. Not sure what else. But we'll think of something, and she's getting into it. She's already talking about the yarn she wants us to buy for her when she's done with this.
