new camera
May. 29th, 2007 10:46 amIt seems to be that we get to have one camera per kid.
Within a few days of Maggie Rose's birth, a digital camera turned up on our doorstep from her paternal grandmother and namesake. I took this as a Hint and have been working on keeping fairly regular pictures up online since, especially when she was small.
Then we had that camera with us while driving out here to Texas, while I was pregnant with Jamie. We stopped at a Dairy Queen to get drinks, and found out another aspect of the whole "everything's bigger in Texas" theme - they sold
selenite this gigantohumonguous coke. Which unfortunately didn't seat itself well enough in the drink holder, and as we went over a pothole pulling out promptly dumped itself all over everything between the front seats, including our maps and the digital camera. We dried it as best as we could, and it sorta still worked, for a brief period more, then died. So we had to replace it.
Then this spring that camera started giving us trouble.
selenite took it to the renfaire in the snow that he and Maggie went to and met friends at. Possibly the problem was it being out in the snow, or possibly it was that he was trying to take pics on near-dead batteries. Most of the pics were unopenable, and unerasable. We're guessing it's a problem with the memory card, and it's happening more often, eating newer pictures, too.
So the plan had been to replace the memory card.
fordprfct and I tried to do so yesterday. He found a 2 gig XD card for cheaper than a 1 gig and barely more than a 512, so great. Turned out no, that camera can't handle anything bigger than 256. Bugger. So we took it back, intending to upgrade the camera. Best Buy only carried midrange and up cameras, and I was looking for low-range. So we tried Fryes. No customer service or help, which since the cameras are all locked up you can't do without. So forget them. Finally ended up at Walmart, where
fordprfct found us a reasonably priced camera with lots more resolution and memory than before, that should work very nicely. It can do some basic video camera stuff, too, which may be interesting to use.
We are ordering a 256 XD card cheaply for the old camera. That will probably fix it. And then it can be given to Maggie, who would dearly LOVE an actual real camera of her own. Handmedowns are good.
