Post GAFilk catchup and filking thoughts
Jan. 16th, 2005 09:02 pmHome in Texas, safely returned with all the STUFF. Been back since last Wednesday, actually, but y'know, life, busy, LJ down.
My younger sister Robyn is visiting with us, and despite various tribulations we are attempting to take her to touristy area stuff and convince her that we have something resembling a life.
GAFilk was marvelous. Strangers no more, we sing! I wish we'd gotten there earlier for the opening party. We had a good time. I stayed up late, sang, even sang my own filk in the wee hours of Sat/Sun. That struck off a Bujold set of three songs. I even ended up dancing reel and jig to a fiddler's music. I sang Lehrer songs and tonguetwister songs and all sorts of things. Religious experience of the weekend was singing along with Cat Faber to "Acts of Creation", while knitting. Ahhh. Oh, and getting
selenite into the room for the Ecumenifilk when someone started playing Kippled Fish, "The Hymn to Breaking Strain" Danced at the banquet, despite Jamie baby, thanks to Sandy Tyras dancing with the baby.
I got to meet people I'd only known online, spend more time with people I knew, and meet new interesting people. (Why, yes, I would like to go back again soon. Now I just need to leave out dishes of milk for the Airplane Ticket Fairy.) Many long distance, but I even met some Texans I'd only known online.
My first cons were filk cons, back in California, and this made me realize how much I've missed it. LA area had housefilks, and my friends in the Atlanta area have them too, and I'd really like to see more of that around here. I'm considering throwing a housefilk birthday party for myself. This would be easier if I had a book full of filk music and played the guitar, or knew anyone who did. However, I have decided not to let this stop me. We can at least get together and LEARN filks.
Details of when are going to be tricky, as I've just discovered that the FenCon II ConCom kickoff meeting is the evening of my birthday. Yes, that banging is the sound of my head intersecting with my desk. Gah. It would be nice to have a birthday party - I haven't had one since I was 16, I think.
And if I pull it off, I shall shamelessly ask for birthday presents. Cheap ones. I want people to give me filk music - sheet music and lyrics, printed out nice, that I can start putting into the filk binder I intend to create. Hm, I suppose I also need a nice big binder, and sheet protectors, and dividers or something. That can happen. I hope people that come to the party will bring lots of copies to share.
We might do some filk karaoke with the player piano. I know of one roll I have that I have a filk for (I know 'cause it's my filk). That's something else I want to achieve more of - piano rolls, especially frequently/easily filked music.
