Sunday, and Tokara!

Dressed Maggie up this morning in her new blue dress again, the one with all the white ruffles and lace. She wore it with her blue and white hat again. She gets SO many comments and compliments on that, it was definitely worth making it for her! I wore my new long blue dress today, although mine doesn't go with the hat. I still love it.

selenite with the kids (thank you, darling!) and went back to the Main Street Arts Festival. There were various performances I'd wanted to see, especially a drum group. I got there too late to see the first Indian dance group, which didn't worry me since they were scheduled to be on again at 5, and the 1 pm Mondo drumming group, which I'd heard in conversation at the framing place yesterday was kids trained in drums. Pity, oh well. I did run into LeeAnn there, we'd seen Mackenzie Friday but not her mom. It was good to stop and chat with LeeAnn for a while, I've missed seeing her. It was windy and threatening rain, off and on cloudy. I had a jacket and my sunhat, and an umbrella stashed in my purse, so I didn't worry about it. I settled down in a good spot, shady at the time and that whole stage is sheltered from the wind, and did a bit of knitting and watched a group doing Hawaiian and Filipino dances. That was interesting and entertaining.
After that was a guy doing hypnotism - I could have stayed and just knit, I suppose, but he was doing loud and obnoxious music at the start, so I didn't. I'd realized I'd left the cellphone in the car, so I went back to get it, with a small side trip through the Barnes and Noble for bathroom and browsing. Then I went by the Royal Caribbean display spot, and went and sat in their inflated little theater (nicely airconditioned, too) and watched their short video. Yeah, I'd love to go on a cruise someday, when we're out of debt. Not anytime soon. I'm really not interested in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, etc. ones. The ones that grab my attention are the Alaskan, Canada/New England, Europe, and Transatlantic. I can dream...
Then I went back and got settled down in a good spot early for the Tokara Taiko Drummers.
OH WOW!!!!!
They were amazing, fantastic, sensuously pleasant, and just marvelous. For me, who loves drums and rhythm and who finds pattern recognition a pleasure, wow, just perfect. The big drums make me feel like my ribcage is vibrating, like I'm having my heart massaged. And it's more than just the music, the visual performance is great, and the energy they put out, oh wow.
We all screamed for more at the end, standing ovation yelling "encore!" The leader was bantering with us on the mike, got us all yelling encore in Japanese. And we did get an encore.
I bought a t-shirt afterwards from their roadies. (heh, they were out of the standard sizes, just had S and XXL, that's fine by me!) Mostly because hey, I didn't have to pay to hear these guys, and they darned well deserved to earn something from a fantastic performance like that. They're on tour now, so everybody, go check, if you're going to be anywhere near them, GO hear them! Here's the page with the tour locations.kd5mdk, jazz007, they'll be in Austin on the 14th. Go!
I didn't get to see the Indian dancers at 5, apparently the storm had looked menacing enough that after their 12 noon performance they'd given up and gone home. Oh well. I stopped by the bookstore on the way home and picked up the book I'd been coveting, At Knit's End. It's already been making me laugh and I'm reading bits toselenite, making him laugh, too. I got groceries on the way home and we had spaghetti, then the inevitable child bathing followed.

Date: 2005-04-11 04:06 am (UTC)Also - Cruises - From folks who've taken them (in-laws, friends, family) the more introverted you are the better off you are in a smaller boat (e.g. Alaska). The big Princess Line ones are claustrophobia + gargantuan crowds.

Love the book! I'm trying to read no more than 10 pages at a time to make it last. Trying.
