Esther Friesner is a SF/Fantasy writer who likes hamsters. She tries to sneak hamsters into all of her books. Even in her Star Trek books; Worf's son Alexander has a pet hamster for a while, which Worf thinks quite silly until he tries to pick up the lil' varmint and it bites him. Worf is then impressed with the small creature's warrior spirit and allows his son to keep the hamster.
