Firstly, I'd been wanting to write about the recent trip to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. The kids and I went there with their Grandma Maggie last week. We had a good time. We put Jamie in the harness-and-leash I made years ago when Brendan was small. It's a bit too narrow for him, had to fudge the fastening. He got to walk on the leash, Maggie got to run around on voice call. We went through the rose gardens. After an initial mishap where Jamie tripped and whacked his nose and forehead on the sidewalk, it mostly went well. We found out that there is a breed of rose called "Maggie"! We took pictures of the two Maggie Rose's with the Maggie rose, although those are on Grandma's camera and I didn't get copies before she went home. We wandered through the Texas roses section, and saw lots of pretties - there's a miniature rose breed called Rainbow's End that grows lots of different color mini roses on the same bush! We saw the fountains, and the Rose Ramp, and went through shady foresty walks near the springs, then out to the big meadow. Jamie was getting pretty tired, so we went back to the car, got the kids into cooler outfits, and put Jamie in the stroller before going on to the Japanese Gardens. That was fun, although tricky with the stroller, there were lots of stairs - those mostly I went up and down with Maggie while Grandma stayed with the stroller. She got to feed the fish, HUGE koi of all colors. We tried to let Jamie feed the fish, but he just tried to eat the fish food. She got to play with another kid some. They have a beautiful shrine - Mikoshi? Something like that, I think the name was more complex than that - given to Fort Worth by its sister city in Japan, I think it was Nagaoka.

Anyway, so this afternoon after lunch we were planning to celebrate the first of May by going to the Botanical Gardens again, this time with Karl. We stopped by a store and got a commercial babyharness for Jamie, so it'd fit. And went to the gardens. Where, despite Mayfest on the other side of town that I was hoping would lure people away, it was incredibly crowded and not a parking spot to be found. BLEAGH.

So we came back to Saginaw and let the kids play in the park here for a while.

Then we went off to run more errands. I'd been letting Maggie's hair grow out for a while. Mostly because although she was cute in short hair, it was cool and easy to care for, people would give me these LOOKS and make comments about her hair being kept so short. So I let it grow out some. It's been a pain, constantly messy, constantly in her eyes, too fine to french braid, and she pulls out barrettes which are then Jamie-choking-hazards. GAH. So today I decided I'd had enough and we went and got her a haircut.

Karl used that time to take Jamie and go to the comic shop. We also got cookies at the mall, let me stop by and pick up some craft supplies at Michael's, and went to a bookstore. I found the lace knitting book I wanted, and Maggie picked out a book, all by herself, an appropriate board book. Good for her.
