Ergo, nomics!
Jun. 10th, 2005 09:34 pmI was discussing words with Karl on the way to Borders tonight. I was seeking the precise meaning of the -nomics suffic - knowledge seems the likeliest one, without digging out the dictionary. (We don't have one in the van. Man, the day I can get Google from the passenger's seat...)
Karl was talking about economics being knowledge/study of the home - which boggled me, that eco means home, considering how things like economics and ecology and all that are all seen as things outside the home, unless you specifically say something like "home economics". Karl said that was like acoustic guitar, and I chimed in with "land line" and "paper letter".
Anyway, I find myself thinking of ergonomics as the study of therefore! (yes, yes, ergo in Greek means work. So, work with me here.)
Although really, "-nomics" ought to mean "hurts". I sit, therefore I hurt. I type, therefore I hurt. Recumbo, ergo nomics!
Anyway, it was a word thing, and I was enjoying babbling about it. Kinda odd, I've been in a serious downer all day, but I was in manic mode in the car.
