Good post from [livejournal.com profile] theferrett. The mosh pit story is not terribly relevant to me, but how he relates it to real life is:

"Look, you have to learn the lesson from this," you say. "This wasn't blind fate; you got into this situation yourself, as a result of your own bad choices. Next time, plan what you're doing, and stop relying on everyone else to clean up for you."

They nod, and look concerned, but twenty seconds after you've left the room you can hear their story changing; suddenly,
[snip] Because they won't learn. There's nothing good that they will gain, because they can't see it's their error.

Oh man, I know too many people like this. It's never their fault, these awful things just HAPPEN to them, and of course they never think that they actually need to plan and do work to get their lives together.
