I'm a bit behind in updating things. Let's see if the chaos stays calm long enough for me to finish this.

With Brendan visiting, I wanted us to get the chance to go out and do something. And the local library system has a program where you can check out family passes to certain local museums. Friday was Karl's day off, so on Thursday I got a pass to the Cattle Raisers Museum near downtown Fort Worth, and we took the kids. They mostly enjoyed it. The museum had a feather headdress that had belonged to Quanah Parker, which was pretty cool. Our fellow Browncoats will understand why we were amused to see a pretty floral bonnet! The display that made me CRINGE was the calf weaners - this metal thing that's fit into the calf's nose with SPIKES. Ow ow ow ow. The kids got to sit on a saddle up on a rack, they enjoyed that.

Then we drove back by the library, dropped off the pass and picked up one for the Cowboy's Hall of Fame, took the kids out to lunch at Chickfila, and then went to the Stockyards area to take the kids to that museum. It didn't impress us much, although the varying kinds of wagons and buggies were interesting. ([livejournal.com profile] phoenixsinger, remember going to the Cowgirl's Hall of Fame? WAY better. The library has passes for that, too, so I'll have to take Karl there sometime.)

When we were done there it was about time for the "cattle drive" they do through the stockyards twice daily, so we waited for that, and Maggie and Brendan got to "ride on a cow". Karl scanned the polaroid of that (yeah, I forgot my digital camera - I'm really just not a camera kind of person), and I'll put it up later, he's not available just now.

We went home, and the little ones got a nap. That evening we went to the Meet the Zoo Animal program at the bookstore in Fort Worth, it's monthly.

There's Brendan and Maggie, waiting for them to bring the animal out.

No, Brendan doesn't do all that well with posing for pictures. Maggie does, though.

And there's Maggie and Jamie

This month they had an African blackfooted penguin. (Apparently there's some kind of penguin movie coming out. Yeah, yeah, I live under a rock.

The Zoo Guy and the African Blackfooted penguin - she's six, and her name is Jack.

Maggie was fascinated. The penguin makes an interesting braying noise. This one imprinted on humans, and is one of their animal ambassadors, goes to schools and such a lot. She was doing this shaking-the-head thing I asked about - apparently it's a mate-attracting thing. Yes, the penguin was apparently flirting.

The evening and the weekend went downhill from there, but I'm going to make that a separate post.
