Oh, the ball winder is good for more than hanks. When you've had a ball tangled and undo half of it, when you're going to use beads and you need to make sure the WHOLE thing has no knots, you wind it first - some people rewind all balls - when you've finished and you have leftover, it's easier if you make a new clean ball of it. My mom finds that yarn balled with the ballwinder is easier to store, she gets more of them into a container.
