What price health

So I started to add up the various costs of this surgery and more especially the support network we've needed to cobble up to get the family through this. Yeesh. For all this, my tush oughta be gold-plated.

Also, it's making me realize more the value of my "job", in seeing what it costs to replace me for a week.

Ethan knew this years ago.

Yes, but saying "A stay-at-home mother would have it so much better on Ethan's world!" just sounds so ludicrous. ;-P

As it happens, I was chatting with my doula, Kathy, yesterday, and she was talking about how teens ought to get training in child care, and talking about how it's the most important work in society. So I started telling her about Ethan of Athos. She was interested, and was going to look into it. I secretly contacted Karl, checked on the phone with a couple of bookstores, and had him pick up a copy on the way home and we gave it to her.

I bet Kathy's work would be much higher paying on Athos.

At the least, major social credits, sounds like.

Well, yes, that being a pretty serious equivalent of paying there.

Kathy would be revered and appreciated on Athos. Except that really, they'd freak, because she's a she. So, well, her work is highly valued.

Lois was carefully vague, but I had the impression you couldn't buy groceries with social duty credits. So it's not valued except for distributing kids.

Well, that's not all it's valued for - didn't whathisname, the guy Ethan was stuck on but who was not good for him - Janos? - pay off a legal fine with them?

Yeah--but I think that's in the tradition of "twenty dollar or twenty days" punishments. On Athos, it's cash OR jail time OR postponing having a kid. So there's not really an exchange rate between them.
