I made my own "handwarmers", which go from 1" before the wrist to just below the first joint on my fingers. I think it took two hours total on #6 needles with Cash Iroha yarn. I knit in the round for the wrists, split for the thumb (with 4-5 extra sts for 1/2" or so around the base of the thumb, that I then cast off, rejoined the round and knit up the palm, split again for the pinkie (I think that one was about four rows, and no "filler" sts). The whole wristlet is maybe 7" long (I'm tall and have long slender hands), and can be comfortably worn for knitting or keyboarding. :)
If you like knitting in the round then a Moebius is the way to go... otoh one can knit a rectangle and put in a half-twist when joining its ends, and there ya go. Bit easier to get the sizing just right that way too. :)
