If it looks like half of a watermelon standing on feet on the pointy end, only about 30" wide (or a little bigger: I haven't measured one lately), it's a kettle drum. Scientific name is 'tympani' (only I think that's the plural form: they usually come in at least pairs). Our choir has a set, too.
