sick router?

[livejournal.com profile] selenite and I lost our internet connection last night. It was (and still is) windy, and occasionally that's briefly taken it out before, and we had company and were busy, so didn't think much of it. This morning, after rebooting all the equipment, I still had none. That's annoying. After very long on hold, I got a cable modem support guy, who, miraculously, was polite and helpful.

What worked was when we disconnected the cable modem from the router, connected it directly to Agatha, and rebooted everything. Which presumably means our router is screwed up. So Agatha is connected, but Anvil, [livejournal.com profile] selenite's computer, is not.

So, now I'm going to go try to catch up on things. I miss anything interesting?

Eh, depending on how you define interesting, Andy and I hit a minor snafu regarding desired area of residence.

I saw that. Had been thinking on what to say. Mostly I think I want to chime in with Karl - why don't y'all come on up and use as as sounding boards.

HUGS.

It could be the configuration of the router. I know that I had to adjust the settings to get a router to work with Adelphia's cable modem service.

The same router worked just fine yesterday with the same service. :-(

Then it probably is the router unless there were power spikes.

No power spikes that I noticed. But it has been windy, and that could have done it. What are you thinking that the power spike would have done if not something to the router?

It might not have totally fried the router but messed up it's settings. Do you remember if you had to change any settings in the router when you first set it up or did you just plugged it in?

If you just plugged it in, then the router is most likely toast. If you had to change settings then you may be able to reset it to the configuration that was used previoulsy.

I happen to have a router that is not in use. I got it for a future project, but haven't quite managed to work on that yet. I'll be happy to loan it to you for a while if you like. It even has wireless ( which might conviniently let me borrow a bit of your bandwidth for my laptop at the filk if you don't mind. )

I'll put it in the gear bag in case of need.

[livejournal.com profile] fordprfct brought over an extra router - but fortunately was able to reconfigure the existing one, so we're back online.

This one has wireless, too, so yeah, you can use the laptop. Hopefully.

Spiffy. Glad all is well in network land again.
