the Amazing Atlanta trip
I spent last weekend visiting friends in Atlanta, and I had a *fantastic* time.
I went out Thursday evening. I don't like airports and planes, and the new level of security - this weird coffinlike box I had to go into as they scanned me for explosives - that was scary. However I got to sit down next to another knitter at my gate waiting area and chat, so that was nice. I got called up to the desk - I went up, knitting in hand, to find out the guy from a row back wanted to switch with me so he could have the odd row with the power plug under the seat - did I need a power plug? I held up my knitting and said no, I'm at a lower level of technology. Just as well, the guy ended up next to an older man who spent the entire flight telling him about his time in the war. Never did plug anything in. I got lots of quiet knitting done.
I got to Atlanta fine, and their train station goes right into the airport, so getting up to the north end of town is easy. It was lovely to see them. I had a lot of fun, and was even introduced to Veggie Tales, so now we know that the little turtle carving on their stairs is the Turtle of Damascus. ;-)
As
joyeuse13 said, we'd thought of going to the aquarium Friday, but this did not work out. We spent time in a lovely nearby park, enjoying a beautiful sunny day, and since she was taking pictures, I got her to do some of me. I may put the best ones up later. We went to an area she knows, had fancy pizza for lunch, went shopping in little boutiquey places, and a used bookstore, and introduced me to gelato. Oh wow.
Friday night was contra dancing. We got there late, about time for their break. But during the break they had musicians in the center, spiffed up for Mardi Gras, alternating waltzes and Cajun twosteps and such. At the end of that they were pulling out beads - I figure hey, it's fun being mellow middleaged, and step away from the bleachers and shout "throw me somethin', Mister!" Didn't think I'd get the chance for that again. Sure enough he did. (No, I did not have to show anything. Not in that setting.) I enjoyed dancing very much. I got to dance two waltzes and three contra dances. My on-again off-again ankle troubles flared up terribly, and have been bothering me ever since. The last couple of dances hurt a lot, but it was worth it!
Saturday was rainy and gray. We got in grocery shopping, setting up dinner for the housefilk, and fabric shopping.
joyeuse13 felt like she was coming down sick, so she napped for the afternoon. The housefilk that night was lovely. We had
curiousmay9,
kitanzi,
autographedcat, and Rob and Beth Cook. There was good food, lots of music, new songs, the chance to sing a lot myself, oh I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Since
joyeuse13 was feeling unwell they slept in late on Sunday. I had time to do laundry, read, knit. I went to the gym with Aaron that afternoon, got to work out on the fancy machines, and go swimming. That was fun. Then that evening Aaron drove me down so I could go to the 5 pm German language service at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. I have been wanting to get my German unrusty, so I can start teaching the kids, and I thought it would be very interesting to hear a service in German. It was indeed. I even followed a lot of the sermon. Not all of it, but a lot. It's very interesting to hear the pastor discussing which languages Paul was writing in, and the meanings of the four different Greek words that correspond to "love", all in German.
Went out to dinner with Aaron after that, then home to where
joyeuse13 was feeling a bit better and could be up and spending time together. I flew home midday Monday.
