Oh, foodies?

On a discussion of teatime treats, I mentioned that I was introduced to lace cookies in March. A chef lady brought them to the monthly knitting get-together, and they're like CRACK. I wish I knew where to buy them.

I did some googling. I found this, but those don't really look like these did. They were thin, rolled up into little tubes and chocolate dipped at one end. They melted in your mouth and were addictive.

Anybody want to share what they know about them?

I remember eating lace cookies in my childhood. I believe the ingredients were brown sugar, eggs, oatmeal and shredded coconut. They did melt in the mouth, and would have been lovely dipped in chocolate.

What shape were they?

well, I remember the version that my mother taught me to bake, which was flat, and made on aluminum foil. I have no reason to think that they couldn't be made rolled, though.

oh...meant to add that since I started baking these at like 7, they could have easily been dumbed-down versions.

I know I've seen a recipe for these somewhere. I've seen them both rolled and flat. If you want the rolled version you take the cookies when they're hot out of the oven and roll them around the buttered handle of a wooden spoon or other dowel-like object.

Aren't they also called pirouelles? Dim memory dredged up the word but google yields a big fat nothing.

I think those (and I know I've seen them; they're sold in cans like Poppycock or the like) are more like thin rolled waffles similar to pizelles.

Yep, that's the trick. I have my Great-Aunt Fan's lace cookie recipe (I think), if you want me to dig it out. She never dipped the end in chocolate, though--I'm going to have to try this once I have my kitchen back. Great-Aunt Fan was also the source of the recipe for caramels (vanilla and chocolate) I make every Christmas.

Pirouettes, I think. And they are more cookie-like, where lace cookies are almost candy. Both are wonderful, however...
