Narnia allegory thought

Since we're home with sick kids, I rented a bunch of videos last night. Today we've been watching Narnia, in bits and pieces. I just had a part of the allegory click into focus for me that I hadn't gotten when reading it in the past.

If the Witch knew the true meaning of sacrifice, she might have interpreted the Deep Magic differently. That when a willing victim has who has committed no treachery is killed in a traitor's stead, the Stone Table will crack and even Death itself will turn backwards

The stone table will crack - allegory for Mosaic law in the form of the tablets. Ohhhhhh. Right.

Interesting insight, albeit with a feeling of "why did I not see that before?"

I guess I'm missing the implication of this.

For quite some time, I entirely missed the whole "Aslan is Christ/God" message that Lewis had in the books. (Honestly, except for one place where he manifests as a lamb? It's not really necessary to enjoy the stories. The lamb is a bit gratuitous, in my reading.)

But anyway, there are, therefore, bits incorporated that refer to Biblical events and transitions. I suspect this is one of them.

"Hey, you Jews! Stop paying attention to Mosaic law, Jesus repealed it all." OWTTE.

Right. I totally got sidetracked on a "Moses already broke the tablets, and it didn't change much."

Do Narns come from Narnia?

[identity profile] selenesue.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay. I just "got" the line about "Every year you grow, you will find me bigger." That was all about spiritual growth. Grr Arg and much smacking of myself upon the noggin!

I just picked up the whole batch of unabridged readings on iTunes, which was priced about $15 less than the CD versions at Borders. Nice. Good performances by big-name actors; "Prince Caspian" with Lynn Redgrave and "Dawn Treader" with Derek Jacobi just got me too and from San Diego this past weekend.

Now that one, I got.

I haven't read the sequels for a long, long time. TLTWATW was one of the bedtime story books last year.

I've got a friend who is trying to get into the computer animation side at the special effects house where he works. I'm making him read the sequels so he has some idea what to put on his audition reel... I'm thinking that there are a lot of vivid images that would serve well to display animation skill and familiarity with the source material.

I decided a while ago that Narnia is actually biblical fanfic. :D

That movie is well-nigh perfect. There's not a damn thing wrong with it, and I'm picky about my biblical fanfic childhood nostalgia.

And Tilda Swinton--soooo badass.

Yep. Fanfic is good.

I was thinking that I'm glad that your White Witch costume is nothing like hers - I actually found hers ugly. And what is with this, the witch of winter has a summer wardrobe?

I noticed that, too...she's actually wearing green in the stone table scene, and what I think is a dress of scale mail in the battle scene.

The stone table scene I could kinda see. I mean, you just don't wear white to a blood sacrifice. You'd never get it clean.

I bet if you're the White Witch you can! ;)

Day Eleven: Bumped into Gandalf who is all sparkly white now. Asked him, "Who do you have to blow to get last bottle of bleach in Middle Earth anyway?" Gandalf said, "The Balrog." So not worth it.

See? Makes you wonder what Jadis and Gandalf get up to off-screen. ;)

There's a fanfic for you to write. Jadis/Gandalf.

You have seen this, have you not?

I love the bit about Gandalf the Jesus Cat.

"I decided a while ago that Narnia is actually biblical fanfic. :D"

ROFL! And agreed about pickiness with childhood favorites.
