Katrina embryos

Okay, I just saw someone's LJ entry where they were complaining about the news story about the frozen embryos that were rescued from New Orleans during Katrina, and now the baby's been born.

Look - nobody had to ARGUE with the embryos to get them to agree to evacuation. No frozen embryo was saying "This is my *home*, and I've always ridden through hurricanes before, and I'm not going!"

Well, okay, I didn't want to go get into an argument with this person.

Gah. People that haven't lived in southern Louisiana just Don't Get what it's like down there. It's a different world. New Orleans especially - there is such a long-term problem of entitlement culture down there. People do not act in ways that others (especially northerners) think is the most rational and sensible way to act.

Side digression - there are SO many ways it's Just Different. Parishes instead of counties. State law is still basically based on the Napoleonic code. You know those software bundles they sell to let you make your own will? Read the fine print - they all say "not valid in Louisiana". All sorts of little cultural differences that are hard to point out. Heck, it was a bit surprising to realize that McDonalds in all states didn't as a matter of course have Filet O Fish specials advertised for Fridays in Lent.

Anyway - a LOT of those people down there were just not willing to go when it was still maybe possible to get them out. (And I say maybe possible - the geography of New Orleans means it's really hard to get a lot of people out fast, even with the thing they do nowadays setting up both sides of the interstates outbound.) Not without doing all sorts of things that would have had liberals screaming about how people's Civil Rights were Being Violated.

Yes, there were incredible stupidities going on. The sunken school buses are an example. I don't think any of this was a big surprise to anyone who's dealt with southern Louisiana bureaucracy. Connects back to the entitlement culture, I'm afraid.

(Now, that guy who stole the bus, in the icon of the person making the post I linked to? I'm all for him, cheer him on and heck no he shouldn't be prosecuted.)

Weird, he didn't get in trouble for stealing the bus, but rather because "driving a commercial vehicle weighing over 26,000 pounds requires a class A, B, or C Louisiana license." *shakes head*

Another case I heard about was a family from up in the St. Charles/Garden district, who evacuated and left behind their van. (You have to wonder WHY, you'd think it'd be the vehicle of choice to take) They saw the footage of the flooding, and thought it was lost, ruined by floodwaters.

Then the police found it - sitting by the side of the road up in Shreveport, in good condition, but totally out of gas. Presumably somebody stole it to escape. Seems a win-win situation to me.
