Well, there's a reason that I convert every pattern I can to working in the round.
Also, I told him I think part of it is the odd combination way I knit, from picking up the yarn continental style yet having picked up using the right forefinger for wrapping. I get incredible control and even tension. The payment for this is that Philosopher's Wool style Fair Isle is impossible for me. But y'know, there's a LOT of knitting out there that I can happily do without ever needing to do Fair Isle.
