Okay, I went ahead and did the Tulip sweater with both colors of purple. So mine has 10 vertical stripes (including the border) instead of 9. I've finished the border at the bottom and along the opening and done the attached i-cord.

Now it's time to do the sleeves, and I'm debating what to do. The body of the sweater is longer - oh good, it'll fit longer, and be warmer. So. Do I simply add an extra stripe to the sleeves - making them 46 rows before the border instead of 39? (And if so, what do I do about adjusting the decreases?) Do I leave the second purple color out of the sleeves and make them according to the pattern? Do I use the second purple, but change color every 6 rows instead of every 8, making it 38 rows?

On the one hand it seems that if I make the body longer I should make the sleeves longer - but it seems as if I'm always rolling up kids' sleeves anyway.

Make the sleeves as planned - they're always too long, as you observe. Make the color changes every 8, so the stripes correspond to the sweater - just stop as originally planned.

Sounds great! Can hardly wait to see it!
