My big Texas baby

I'm tired out this week and catching up from being on the computer, but I did want to get this posted.

Alanna had her "six weeks" appointment with the midwife on Wednesday. If you've been following along, you'll realize she's 7 weeks old - Lisa was out of town last week.

There were exclamations of WOW when I came in with her. I handed her over to Lisa to weigh. 15 lb 5 oz. Wow indeed. Lisa looked at me with a straight face and deadpanned "You might want to think about supplementing with formula, failure to thrive, you know" She and the other midwife were then laughing and talking about how Alanna's clearly been getting CREAM!

She's 24" long now, so gaining length as well as weight. We pointed out that we've had to go up to the 6-9 month size for the outfits to be long enough for her torso.

She's in great health. There's no sign of the heart murmur anymore, so that's good. I thoroughly enjoyed showing her off to the midwives, playing pass-the-baby, and rhapsodizing about what a marvelous SWEET child she is. They realized they hadn't done a picture of her at birth, so took a shot of her in my arms on the couch. Man, any nervous first-time mothers going through the albums and finding that picture are gonna panic. "No, no, you will NOT give birth to a child that size!"

My blood pressure sucked, which is a shame since it HAD been better after the pregnancy. But it was a hot day, I'd been working, and not drinking water. Also my diet, no dairy to avoid colic for Alanna, has not been great on the BP front.

So as of that evening, we've started carefully reintroducing dairy. After all, gestationally she's 9 weeks, and they say they outgrow the colic at 2-3 months. I had *one* slice of swiss on a sandwich Wednesday. No colic. Two pieces of cheesy garlic toast yesterday - no colic. So I'm suspecting we're good, although I'm going to ramp it up slowly. Yay.

Oh, I'm glad the no-dairy thing won't be long-term!

Nope. Well, I figured it wouldn't be more than a few months, and she's worth it. Still, there is gonna be a cheesecake in my future.

And by the way, and I mean this in the nicest and most tongue-in-cheek way possible, I've decided you're nuts on the whole "wanting them once they're 3 or so" thing. Alanna? Sweet, adorable, no problem, I could handle an infant all day. (Wait - that's right - I do.) The three year old, however, has me tearing my hair out - and it's not just the language delay thing (although MAN, that and the sensory disorder make this HARD), because the five year old is also giving me a lot of grief. Can I keep Alanna an infant plzkthks?

Well, we do want to visit you and all of your sweet and maddening kids. :) So start thinking about whether you want us before Fencon or after. (After may be easier w/ my class schedule, but I have to see what Aaron's teaching load is like.)

Yay!

Either way could be good for me. I suspect my schedule is lots more flexible than yours.

WOw, that is one big baby

My Zoƫ is 11 months old and weighs 2.5 lbs more than Alanna and is only 2.5 inches taller. So if Alanna has been getting cream, then clearly my little pumpkin has been getting skim.

WAY TO GROW, BABY!

Everything's bigger in Texas ;-P

That said, growth rates vary a lot. It's possible that 9 months from now, she may have only gained 2-3 more lbs and 2-3 more inches. I don't know.

I'm told I weighed the same on my 2nd birthday as my first, but I was a lot taller.

Alanna's not 2 months old yet, and Paul only outweighs her by 10 pounds or a bit more. And they say he's a big baby. Yikes! Everything is indeed bigger in Texas.

That's my niece, she belongs in our family of big, healthy babies. (And overachievers who start early?)

Note for myself - had Karl measure her head circumference - 16.25"
