stupid duplicate stitch

Duplicate stitch, IMO, SUCKS.

And I can never figure out why sometimes it comes out looking okay and other times it doesn't cover worth a darn.

Sorry, love, I haven't done this. However, I did google in search of wisdom, and found a photo tutorial. Perhaps she has a slightly different style of working this that might be helpful. Look here:
