Oct. 31st, 2004 07:37 pmLast night was the ORAC Halloween party. We had a good time, and finally got to see the Miller Dome Home.

Tonight was trick-or-treating, in the same costumes. Jamie stayed home with Daddy who was handing out candy.
I wish I'd thought to make up a big sign that said "KNOCK". Every time the door bell rings Jamie freaks out. Karl did his best to intercept kids before they could ring.
We had a good night for it. There were thunderstorms on the way in, so it was cool and windy and we were seeing lots of spooky lightning way up high in the clouds. I took the umbrella just in case. We did get sprinkled on for a bit, but it stopped. The kids had a good time. I had Brendan take Maggie's hand and walk her up to doors, and I stayed back at the sidewalk. I asked Maggie a few times if she was having fun, and she said "yeah!"
We didn't stuff the pumpkin costume, partially because I wanted to allow her more freedom of movement, partially I was afraid if we took a lot of extra time it would rain. Just as well, since part of the way back where there wasn't a house for a while I carried her, that'd've been harder with it stuffed.
She did get scared once, at the end of our block as we were heading back home. They had one kid there running around in a skeleton outfit, and another sitting at the edge of the garage, all in black with a scary mask, motionless with the bowl of candy in his lap. Brendan walked up to him, and Maggie was behind him about 2/3rd of the way up the driveway. Just as Brendan got there the guy jumped at him with a scary sound. Brendan startled, but Maggie was scared, turned and RAN to me with her arms outstretched, crying "hug!" and then telling me "scared. scared!" The guy hadn't seen her behind Brendan and was so apologetic for having scared her. I was kneeling with her and telling her it was all pretend, and could she be brave and go back up? He'd taken off his mask and came partway down the driveway and bent down to reassure her. She was brave and got her candy, but then as we were walking away she was softly saying "scared."
