Mitzvahs and knitting
Feb. 5th, 2005 11:32 amThis morning, with us sleeping in after staying out late at a birthday party of Maggie's 3 year old friend,
ulfrikr's daughter, and then driving home from way the heck out there, there was a knock on the door.
selenite can get into clothes to make him decent quicker than I can, so he was sent down to it. Turned out to be the local Boy Scout troop doing a food drive for nonperishables. He told them we didn't have anything.
Well, I knew better, so after taking care of baby Jamie, I got into PJs and clogs, went downstairs and cleaned out the pantry - things I'd gotten to try on Brendan that he'd then turned his nose up on, experiments for recipes that didn't work out and then I never touched the rest of the cans of ingredients, things that seemed like a good idea at the time, the time I didn't tell
selenite that "no, really, brand MATTERS to me on this thing on the grocery list" - that sort of thing. Filled up a grocery bag kinda heavily. Then I headed outside and found the scouts troop at the end of the block.
So I felt good. Did a mitzvah. And was done well by in return. See, normally I probably wouldn't have gotten these PJs out - they're the warm fleece ones I got before Maggie was born, and these days I'm keeping the house warm enough, what with her spending time half-dressed in potty training, that usually I wouldn't wear them. And stuck inside the leg of the PJs, missed during folding, was the missing sock from my handknit broadripple socks, which had been missing since the trip - the last time I'd used the PJs - and was upsetting me, as that's my very favorite pair of my handknit socks so far. I might not have found it otherwise for a LONG time.
Then I ended up going out to the store to pick up some A&D for Jamie, some stuff for breakfast, and what I needed to take food with me to the ORAC meeting this afternoon. I was amused to see that they now have two Lion brand yarn "Learn to knit" kits at WALGREEN's! One a novelty scarf, one a plain scarf and hat. Okay, knitting IS getting trendy, isn't it?

Date: 2005-02-05 05:43 pm (UTC)My mother has taken up knitting again, after a 40-year layoff. Madame Trendy herself. That says all.
A newish gal in Angels is willing to teach remedial knitting to people like me who never learned how. I may take her up on it.

Date: 2005-02-05 06:46 pm (UTC)Knitting is more than getting trendy. Knitting is all the rage. Knitting even made the quarterly journal I just got from the Alumnae Association of my college. I was flabbergasted.
My daughter (see icon), who won't do anything that isn't in the slightest geeky but who also rebels against doing anything that could be considered a fad, is starting to knit. She learned the first time whilst she was still Taking Class (what the cognoscenti call studying ballet) but dropped it for about 3 years. She's back into it.
Go figure.

Part of beginning knitting is learning to see when you drop a stitch, when you accidentally pick up a new one, learning to "read your knitting" in general. Which is difficult to impossible for a beginner to do with the novelty yarns.
