We are now a two-computer family!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse13 in her generosity in giving us the computer, and to [livejournal.com profile] patgund and Gerry Tyras in giving me advice on getting the hardware upgrades I needed, and to [livejournal.com profile] ulfrikr for giving us a monitor.

I've installed a new big hard drive on Anvil (so named because it will primarily be [livejournal.com profile] selenite's computer, and Brendan's when he visits), put in an ethernet card, and set up a router for our cable modem connection.

Both computers are communicating with the internet. Yay!

Unfortunately, I'm not doing nearly as well at getting them to communicate with each other. We can sneakernet with floppies, of course, and now that I have Trillian set up on Anvil, I can send files from Dragonfly via the chat connection. I had a local network in mind, so we could back up each other, but that's not yet working. Anvil has XP, and has a nice network setup wizard, that has me create a file on a floppy to go run on the other computer(s). When I try to run it on Dragonfly, it doesn't like Dragonfly's NT OS. So no luck. Trying to figure out how to do it from Dragonfly hasn't worked at all.

([livejournal.com profile] patgund? Help?)

Still, much progress. I can stay logged onto LJ and Gmail and Yahoo PERMANENTLY!!!! Bwahahaha!

NT will be unhappy unless there's some kind of authentication happening. It prefers to have a domain server doing that.

I can't even get that far. I'd be happy to set it up as the server, if it could give me such an option.

I've generally wanted to stay away from XP, but that's what Anvil has, and so far it seems to be working out reasonably for Karl. I dislike changing OS - darn it, I know where everything is in whatever OS I've already been using - but I may look into XP for Dragonfly, find out how $$$ it is, and figure out if I can transfer it over without losing everything on the hard drive.

Which would of course be so much less perilous if I could get it to connect to Anvil now and back it all up...

Did I miss something, has Brendan moved out?

Ah, yes he is. We switched arrangements - he's now living with the ex and visiting here, rather than living here and visiting there, for a few years. He next visits in March.

Ok, I'm not the only one who missed something.
