3-D doily

Amongst the various small projects I'm working on right now, I'm crocheting this:

Because sometimes I just need to prove I can make something totally frilly and useless if I WANT to, darn it.

I'm currently on round 17 of 19. I'm probably done for tonight, I'm getting too sleepy and I have to get up early tomorrow.

It's pretty, and it's got the hearts and all, but it's distressingly UN-flat. I'm wondering if ironing it, maybe with a soft cloth over it, will work when it's done. Or is it okay that it's not terribly flat? Crocheting doilies is not part of my regular project schedule.

I'll get back to more serious work soon. The extra yarn is here so I can finish those socks soon, and the mother-daughter crocheted hats are done. (The dress I planned to wear WITH the hat has not yet arrived, darn it.)

Oh good, the voice of experience. I tend to make useful stuff, and don't usually do doilies. But this one is fun. I have only the one row to go, I'll see when I get time for it.

My recollection is that a moderate-sized doily takes me about 10-15 minutes to soak and pin out, depending on how pin-happy I get. I use the back of my bobbin lace pillow (it's insulation foam rather than a Real pillow, so I'm not worried about destroying it), and have been known to use a mattress although that's not necessarily a good idea, especially if one forgets a pin.... A bulletin board might work too, though I haven't tried that.
