Whew, what a day
May. 12th, 2005 01:45 pmIt's been a busy day so far.
Started out with getting up early to take
selenite to pick up the other car that was getting its brakelight fixed. Or that was the plan, anyway. We overslept. I know I set the alarm, but I don't know what happened. Jamie woke at 3 am to get changed and nurse, which generally means by the time the alarm goes off, I'm back under and in a very deep sleep phase.
Finally got out of the house. Took
selenite to pick up the other car. Went and mailed off some packages for him. Drove by and dropped off 2 tapes and a DVD at the library.
Now, the reason
selenite had to get the brakelight fixed was that he'd been ticketed and we found out we were overdue for car inspections. So my next stop was at a lube and inspection place. There's one close to home, but what would I do with two toddlers in their waiting room for a long time? Eek. If it was just me I could happily sit and knit. But I found one just across the street from a Chickfila with a playplace. So great. I did ask
selenite about the intermittent check engine light problem, which is apparently transmission work from last year that didn't "take" properly. He said no, they just check lights and horns.
Sadly the information he'd gotten was incomplete - the guy told me straight off it wouldn't pass. Offered to run a diagnostic, but I didn't want to be stuck there with the kids. So I had him do the oil change, took the kids to the Chickfila, and finally had my brunch while they were playing. Came back, got the car.
Then we went to the library, and picked up all the stuff they had on hold for me. I LOVE the hold function online. It's hard to browse the library, Jamie in a stroller can reach books on BOTH sides of the aisle. But if they're on hold, I just stand in line and check 'em out. Whee. Oh, and Maggie was a good girl and used the bathroom at the library.
The best I could think of to do on the car was to go to the new Saginaw branch of the company that had fixed the transmission before, then put the kids in the double stroller. It was going to be a LONG walk, but oh well. I was plotting out the best route, back streets and places with sidewalks wherever possible. I drove by the house first, to drop off the heavy bag of library books and videos, then went down there and started explaining the story to the guy. Well, they said they could drive us home, and were even willing to not worry about the kids not having carseats - theirs are built into the van, which had led me to abandon any idea of a taxi. Then it turned out they couldn't do warranty work for the other shop. Gah. They were able to check the codes for me, and thought maybe they could just clear the codes long enough for me to get it inspected. But on turning it on, they heard a whining sound, which
selenite had been concerned about, and said that it was definitely not normal. They asked about the warranty dates - I checked with
selenite, despite us being within the time warranty, we were not in the mileage warranty - so might as well let them take care of it. They had the lovely idea of just driving me and the kids home in the van, then driving it back there. Marvelous.
The guy I'd been talking to drove the van around front with the kids while I went in to fill out paperwork. This apparently scared Maggie and she just hid her face in her hands - she was crying most of the way home. (Certain friends who get heavily Into gender issues may be amused to hear that the guy referred to Maggie as "him", despite her currently dressed in a pink t-shirt and a yellow hat with blue flowers.)
So now I wait. But I'm home in comfort, don't need to go anywhere urgently, and have plenty to cook in the house.
The only remaining nuisance is that my sinuses are utterly miserable, my allergies are going nuts. Hoping for a quiet day, I might risk taking an antihistimine. I figure Maggie had a rough time and got scared, so I'm being nice and letting her watch her favorite video.
