The Bedtime Reading Poll (or, I Have a Paid Account and I'm Gonna Figure Out How To Use It)

We have established a nightly bedtime routine including reading out loud. Generally I'm the one reading, unless I'm having throat problems and ask [livejournal.com profile] selenite to take over. The kids have children's books that get read during the day. Once Jamie gets old enough to stop ripping them up, they'll have more - as it is, he's rough even on board books. But for bedtime, we don't use those, we don't use stuff like Dr. Seuss, we read children's classics, chapter books. I know they don't really follow the story yet, but they're certainly going to be learning vocabulary and sentence structure. We like children's classics, they need to be not only stories interesting for children but interesting enough to keep the parents' attention. I prefer the classics also because we like history, and they've stood the test of time.

We read The Little Princess last year, and since then we've been going through the whole Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder - the series I learned to read from as a child. It's nice, [livejournal.com profile] selenite hadn't read any of these, so he's getting introduced to them all, too. We're about done, we're in the final section of On The Way Home. So we need to pick a new set of bedtime reading. (We own all the ones below except the Narnia books)

(When saying WHY you recommend it, please put in at least an abbreviation as to which one - since otherwise I'm juggling two windows to see what goes with what you say.)

Hobbit after Narnia.

Little Women only if you actually like it. When I got it, I tried to read it -- I even had it, IIRC, as a college book! I have avoided that book SO MUCH. *shudder*

Oh, I do like Little Women. Rather fond of it.

I'd have picked Anne of Green Gables next, but there's lots of voting for Narnia, including Karl. Tricky thing is I don't own that series. I expect I'll be stopping by some Half Price Books soon. I can request them from the library, but they may be more in demand right now.

Don't forget half.com; they frequently have books at cheaper prices even than eBay; plus, you get the same feedback points.

I agree with archangelbeth: Narnia first. The Mortimer books by Joan Aiken are also great fun. If they like animal stories, the Rabbit Hill books by Robert Lawson (of "Ben and Me" Disney fame) make good bedtime reads.

Hmmm, I remember Rabbit Hill, I should have that . . . probably back at my parent's place though.
