Happy Birthday, Maggie!

Maggie's birthday was actually last Wednesday the 8th. But we didn't tell her so, and we're celebrating it today, so we can have some friends of the family come over and play with her. She's known something was up, and has been talking about birthdays and cakes and candles a LOT lately, so it's a great relief to finally tell her yes, she's a Birthday Girl! I haven't been able to convince her that she's 3 yet.

I am attempting to make my first egg-free cake, so Jamie can have some too. I hope hope hope it's edible. It just went back in the oven for a little more time. It looks awfully flat.

Darn it, here I am not having to cook one GFCF, and I run into another diet problem. I just wanna make plain cakes!

The kids are eating breakfast. Karl's just mowed the lawn, so they can play out there today. He gets to go make this ----->
shortly. Possibly while I'm out taking the kids with me to pick up groceries for the day, so that they aren't watching him from the window, and he can toss a tarp over it for a Grand Unveiling later.

I still have to wrap a couple of her presents sent to her by relatives. She's mostly just getting the big outside one, she really doesn't need a lot more toys. She is getting a couple of books, though. (Well of course she is - she's a Gallagher!)

I need to tidy up the house some - I ought to have been cleaning yesterday, but well, people are pretty much going to get this place as it usually is, I'm just going to try to clear off enough of the top levels to put things down and have places to spread out snacks and such.

You've probably already seen this, but I've got a friend with an egg allergy and found this page of cake recipes and icings after poking around a bit.

No, I hadn't. I just got another link to a specific cake from that site, in response to my post on [livejournal.com profile] food_allergies, a few minutes ago. Clearly I'm going to need to poke around that site some and get better prepped for the future.

Sigh. Darn it, I was just getting happily into the mode of not needing to cook for Brendan any more, and hey look! I could grab mixes off the shelf! No. Also I was starting to gear up to cook with more eggs in general, it's a cheap source of protein. Well, I can still make omelets for Karl and I.

Heh. You could try poking around the library and finding vegan cookbooks - I've got one, because I know that I can crack it open and find recipes without milk in them. I'm intolerant, not allergic, so it's easier for me to deal, but I've got a friend who's allergic to a number of things including eggs, raw tomatoes, cabbage, nuts, and a few other things I can't remember that are staples of Chinese cooking, so if I cook for her, I've got to carefully go over the list of ingredients and be creative.

I've got this wonderful vegetarian cookbook that has most recipes without eggs (not the cakes, alas: I looked) by Deborah Madison: Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. (Man, my eating has gotten so unhealthy of late, it may be time to temporarily go vegetarian again, just to boot myself out of my meat-and-starch rut. But not until after I've made stock with this roasting chicken and eaten the pork in the freezer. XD)
