Three of my favorite quotes from the new Terry Pratchett book, Thud!, so far.
I don't think any of these is particularly spoilery, just enjoyable. But I'll put them behind a cut for those who might prefer it.
And I think I shall use this as an opportunity to show off the pretty library icon I snagged from
cawti today.

He knew in his heart that spinning upside down around a pole wearing a costume you could floss with definitely was not Art, and being painted lying on a bed wearing nothing but a smile and a small bunch of grapes was good solid Art, but putting your finger on why this was the case was a bit tricky.
The important thing is not to shout at this point, Vimes told himself. Do not ... what do they call it ... go postal? Treat this as a learning exercise. Find out why the world is not as you thought it was. Assemble the facts, digest the information, consider the implications. Then go postal. But with precision.
Vimes had never got on with any game much more complex than darts. Chess in particular had always annoyed him. It was the dumb way the pawns went off and slaughtered their fellow pawns while the kings lounged about doing nothing that always got to him; if only the pawns united, maybe talked the rooks around, the whole board could've been a republic in a dozen moves.

Obviously need to bump "Thud" up a notch or two on the to-be-read list.
Narnia, then Boort's Fair Tax book, then maybe "Thud" before launching off into the Vorkosigan books...
And there will be more Stross books in 2006 I think. More. Want MORE.

Date: 2005-10-19 03:59 am (UTC)I need to read the Fair Tax book to 1.) Sharpen my arguments, 2.) satisfy my curiosity, and 3.) get at least one serious book read this year.
I trust Boortz a pretty fair amount, but I want to check his work on this one before I start preaching it in earnest. Good concept on the surface. www.fairtax.org if you're interested.
And my apologies for injecting politics into a perfectly nice book discussion. I'll quit now. :-)
