Floating Dutch houses

Elizabeth Moon wrote a short story about this, I'm not sure how many years ago, it's in a collection of hers. That one was set in the Mississippi river valley. I read it and enjoyed it. (We have the collection - but it's downstairs, and I'm still on a no-stairs promise to [livejournal.com profile] selenite

I think this is tremendously sensible. As I was saying earlier to [livejournal.com profile] faxpaladin, this is one of the fun things about being a science fiction fan, when you see the stories start becoming reality.

Holland has an advantage

The coast of Holland doesn't get hurricanes quite as frequently as Florida, Louisiana, etc.

That said, I've always wanted a Travis McGee style houseboat. One would have to steam it away from the path of storms, though.

A Dutch co-worker remarked to me last month that we should be looking to the Netherlands to learn how to build levies. Reclaiming land from the sea is, after all, what they do.

The anthology title is LUNAR ACTIVITY.
Living as close as I do to The River, that one stuck in my mind when I first read the book. Don't recall the actual story title, though.
