Filk stuff online
Oct. 22nd, 2005 06:45 pmI got to have a phone chat this afternoon with one of my favorite filkers, which was fun. We both bemoaned not being at OVFF. I've never been to that one. I used to go to ConChord back in Los Angeles - that was actually my first con. Yeah, many filkers start from regular cons and come to filk ones later, I did it the other way around.
So it got me to thinking about filk stuff, and I did some poking around. There's a filk community on LJ. I just joined. I feel stupid finding this out - I mean, if you had asked me "is there a filk community on LJ?" I'd have said well, sure, there must be! But it hadn't occurred to me to go find it. Silly me. Let this be a lesson to you, it is a good idea to occasionally go look around at your friends' userinfo pages. I knew about the filk online radio, but haven't gotten it to work on my computer yet. I found a really well-written LJ post, A handy-dandy OVFF survival guide, which is a great guide to a filk con in general, and not a bad source of information for someone going to cons in general. I must remember to point that to people on the Texas Filk list, once
faxpaladin changes my email addy on the list to my gmail one, we've had people asking about advice for first cons. I particularly like her "six-two rule", I've found that to be very true, although I find I can also substitute more showers for some of the sleep. Substituting meals for sleep, well, heck, I do that even when I'm not at cons.
Then I found the Dandelion Report pages, and have been enjoying poking around there.
cadhla's OVFF survival guide has been posted there, too.
And hey, look, Wired magazine had an article on ConChord and filk! Okay, yeah, it suffers from some of the faults that the media always falls prety to when reporting fannish stuff, so I roll my eyes some, but it's better than a lot. I miss ConChord. It would be nice to go to one again someday. Not next year, they're not doing one, I presume because of the big LA Con. At the moment my priority would be more trying to get to OVFF some year soon, though. And getting back to GAFilk. Well, I gotta heal from this surgery, have to get the budget more into line, and have to figure out what to do about the kids - they are just NOT at ages where they'd be good to have at a filkcon.
And I've been putting a lot more of my filk music onto my computer, so since I'm playing the music from Agatha up here, I'm getting to listen to more filk today, too. I wonder if
selenite would be willing to do some more of that with the new CDs I bought at FenCon? I shall ask him when he next comes upstairs.
Hm. Must Find Good Filking Icon!

This year's ConChord was a lot of fun, despite having to work around the reporters. [grin] You've got to know, none of them exactly blended in with the crowd. But it was great to be back, I missed filking along with so many other activities that involved getting out of the house for so long.
