I hadn't caught up on the news yesterday, but weather's on my mind this morning - helped dress the kids more warmly to go off to church with Karl as it's 56 and 20mph windy out here. Now that Grandma has gone back to New York we get fall again.

So I checked CNN and noaa.gov. Whee. Okay, Wilma is finally turning, apparently still towards Florida. I saw that with this cold front coming down they expect more tornados than usual. Hm, apparently although it was moving very slowly before, it's moving very fast now. And it's still aimed to go up the Atlantic coast. Looks like it's going to go right over Nova Scotia and P.E.I. Of course I have no idea how strong it will be then. Will probably at least brush Long Island from the current prediction. What's the island NE of Nova Scotia? (As I expose a gap in my geography knowledge, sigh)

Aha, I just found something on wunderground.com. "After crossing Florida, Wilma should bring tropical storm force winds to the northern Bahama Islands, but not hurricane force winds. Wilma should pass close enough to North Carolina's Outer Banks to bring 40 mph winds there. Wilma is not expected to bring high winds to New England, but could bring 50 mph winds to Nova Scotia five days from now." So no hurricane hitting my inlaws.

And - we have Tropical Storm Alpha. Good. I mean, I hope it doesn't do damage, but darn it, if so many people have to go through so much this year, let's make it clear that this is the record breaking year, none of this "ties with year thus-and-such on # of named storms, ties with year thumpety-whatsis for # of major hurricanes", etc.

The NOAA site is screwed up on the stuff for Alpha. The 5-day cone only shows to Monday, and the wind warning charts and such that are there aren't matching where Alpha is, looks like the ones from Wilma have been accidentally copied over. But to me it looks like Wilma and Alpha could cross over/overlap. (Now I have some vague memories from Ghostbuster about not crossing the streams coming to mind.)

Given that I don't have cable, and am restricted to upstairs and my computer is my only contact with the outside world, and I'm no newshound anyway, I expect most of my flist probably knows more than I do. (But I'm posting anyway, it's my journal)

It's Cape Breton Island, I think.

Thank you. I am always trying to improve my education.

Hm, I don't know anything about the place. I think I will toss that at the library website and see what books I can check out and read up on it. That can be one of my next mini-research subjects.

Some of the computer models have Alpha dissipating, some of them have Alpha actually merging with Wilma.

Earlier I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] selenite that the map looked like they might meet. He was wondering if they merged, what would they call the result? And I wondered if they split again, could they tell which part was which?

It's turning out to be a really weird year, isn't it?
