I saw this today:

She knitted it in mohair for cold Michigan winters and dog walking. I looked at it and thought darn, it'd have been nice to have done that in cotton for Karl back when he was doing SCA heavy fighting. Nice soft absorbent cotton, and it'd've been sweat-absorbent padding under his helm.

And if you did it in metallic-looking silver thread it would've looked like chain peeping out from under the armor.

Or does he use a chain coif already, rather than just a helm?

Cloth coif under helm, chain camail hanging from visor of helm to protect throat. Not that it gets used any more.
