So we went out and got Maggie new shoes.
She'd been wearing Babypaws shoes, from NZ, which are lovely soft flexible leather shoes. She was outgrowing them, and I'd been intending to measure her feet again and order her a new pair, possibly in a different style. I just hadn't gotten around to it.
Then she had the evaluation with the psychiatrist at the regional center, where they declared her to be provisionally autistic. Dr. Beneviste pointed out her toe walking, and that the soft shoes (I actually had them ON her, at least...this summer she's spent more time barefoot) didn't make any difference on that. She told me that she recommended I get her into shoes with stiffer soles to discourage the toe walking.
So today we took her to Stride Rite. It was NOT cheap, but I'm glad I went there - got someone expert at measuring her feet, and from her answers, I think this is not the first time she's been asked about stiffer shoes to discourage toewalking. We got her white leather shoes, with the higher tops, that lace up. This, the lady said, should help keep her whole foot braced into the right position. Rather than the totally plain ones, I got the ones with pretty scalloped edges and little pink roses. :-) They were laced in white, but with pink laces in the box - when she goes to bed tonight I'm swapping laces. Also got her some socks, several pairs white, a couple pink.
AHA - Here's a picture of them!
Also went ahead and got the little bell doohickeys, that you put on over the laces to keep her from untying them. Getting those back on after Gymboree was a PAIN. I wonder if I'll get good at getting them on before she learns to get them off.
It was definitely not cheap. But I tell myself to not think of them so much as shoes, but as ongoing therapy for her.
It seems a little strange to her to walk in them. The bells seem to intrigue her.
I will say that when she falls asleep one block from the house, and I have to carry her in, then gently do a sleeping diaper change before getting her into the crib, having bulky shoes with bells on them makes it all the more difficult...
