Filk of mine

When I posted about the recent housefilk, and mentioned singing three of my own filks, two new,
joyeuse13 wanted me to share them. So okay, I'm finally getting around to it.
This came up when various people were taking a swing at filking King of the Road - a song I know and love well - on the Bujold list. I told them "Not to disdain the efforts of others filking this tune – but to me, the song embodies one person’s look on life, perhaps one person’s complaints. So think of Miles’s complaint, in Komarr, of how he’s erred – he wanted fame, and he got a career that disappeared into the classified files."

Soldiers for sale or rent,
Ships to take us where we’re sent.
No cushy courier spot,
I’m breaking bones on combat drops!
Ah, but, risking all for Barrayar, earns a measly lieutenant’s bars.
I’m a man of renown who’s unknown –
“Admiral” Miles.
Third jumpoint, with Nicol, heading out from Jackson’s Whole
Poor Taura made up my mind, I don’t leave captives behind!
I twist all Simon’s strategy, to make a plan ok by me.
I’m a man of renown who’s unknown –
“Admiral” Miles.
I know every mercenary on every ship,
They know I’m a genius, and not just some crip.
But back on Barrayar, they all think the same,
That I’m a mutie cashing in the family name!
Ah, when
Ceta needs to get stopped
Here I go in prison dropped
No clothes, no cup, no mat,
I ain’t got no feathered hat!
Ah, but risk and grey in Simon’s hair gets a medal I never can wear.
I’m a man of renown who’s unknown –
“Admiral” Miles.

This is the fault of the ORAC email list, which got into a discussion and Pun War about Firefly as a virus and all of us as carriers. This is TTTO The Flupandemic, by the Flying Fish Sailors. (A song beloved in my family, my favorite example of cheeriose, and all
kd5mdk's fault. Bless him.)

It was the Alliance unification, and it swept the system 'round.
It got soldiers and civilians and it knocked them to the ground.
Whether living on the core worlds, or scrabbing at the rim,
The purplebellies rule it all and life is pretty grim.
There was a sergeant down on Hera standing on the battleground,
He turned there to his buddy, with their coats a muddy brown.
He said, "We've made it through New Kasmir, Verbena, and Du Khang
But I fear Serenity Valley's going to end us with a bang!
It was the Alliance unification, and it swept the system 'round.
It got soldiers and civilians and it knocked them to the ground.
Whether living on the core worlds, or scrabbing at the rim,
The purplebellies rule it all and life is pretty grim.
A girl at the Academy, sponsored by Blue Sun,
Escaped their machinations, and now she's on the run.
Her brother got her out of there, and he's in hiding too,
Pursued by bounty hunters and the creepy Hands of Blue.
It was the Alliance unification, and it swept the system 'round.
It got soldiers and civilians and it knocked them to the ground.
Whether living on the core worlds, or scrabbing at the rim,
The purplebellies rule it all and life is pretty grim.
From Whitefall, New Hall, Lilac, all worlds out by the Rim,
The rumors came of of horror tales, of bloody raids so grim.
Mothers, fathers, uncles and aunts, anyone near the attacks,
Were beaten and bloody and ripped into bits and fed as Reaver snacks.

It got soldiers and civilians and it knocked them to the ground.

Well, the farmer from old China took his family out to space,
And now the Anglos speak Chinese, with accents not a trace.
An eager little Badger, in the docks of old Eavesdown,
Just grins as he cheats both types of elites, until he owns the town!

So there I was in the filk room at ConDFW, and somebody said there was a Bujold filk they really wanted someone to write. Yes? She suggested filking TTTO Paperback Writer and having it be Admiral's Captain. I finally ran with it. Now if I can only find her email address.
Admiral's Captain
TTTO Paperback Writer, filked by Laura Gallagher
Came from Beta, with a planet to scout,
It took us years to find, now let's check it out.
Now it’s claimed with guns by these men named Vor
And I’m changing fast, think I wanna be the Admiral’s Captain
Admiral's Captain!
It’s a dirty story of a noble man.
And her Betan shrink doesn't understand.
The Emperor’s working for dynastic goals,
Aral does the job, but he wants to wed the Admiral’s Captain
Admiral's Captain!
Barrayarans ... Admiral’s Captain!
Barrayarans ... Admiral’s Captain!
There's a thousand deaths, give or take a few
And they’re killing more in a week or two
This bloody warfare is Vordarian’s style
I could run back home, but want to be the Admiral's Captain
Admiral's Captain!
I paid too much, but I brought back his head
End your stupid war, there’s too many dead.
If you must come find me, I’ll be with my son,
Just don’t cross me now, ‘cause you know that I’m the
Admiral’s Captain,
Admiral’s Captain!

Date: 2005-12-02 11:06 pm (UTC)Terrific! The first one is earworming in my head and crowding out the tune for Paperback Writer ... then again that's a much-filked song, while King of the Road isn't. Agree w/ Rob; worth printing and adding to my filk book! Thanks for sharing.

Date: 2005-12-03 02:34 am (UTC)One nitpick: "renown" has no "k" (no direct connection with "know"), and it rhymes with "clown" as in By, not "clone" as in Mark. OK, that's two nitpicks.
