I am actually making french onion soup. It's in the crockpot now. Whee. I just made a recipe from ingredients I had in the house that were not bought with that as a plan. That's pretty rare. Okay, both the onions and the bouillon cubes were stuff my mother-in-law bought while she was here, but still.
I never really learned much cooking. I could probably still count on my hands, if I had a good enough memory, the times I've cooked something that started with cutting up onions. Kneading and baking bread, though, yes. And as the kids get a bit older, I might try to do that again sometime too.
Someday I still really want one of those wooden kneading troughs like I see at various historical re-enactment places. Heh. On our side trip into New Jersey back in 2000, I took Karl to various fun historical stuff, including the Ford mansion - I was hanging over the rope across the kitchen doorway seriously envying theirs.
