Karl's diaper blunder
Sep. 15th, 2003 09:15 amKarl has now outdone my dad's famous diaper blunder.
When my younger sister Robyn was a baby, once in the middle of the night Dad got up to change her when she woke up wet. He got the plastic pants and the diaper off, got her cleaned up, got another cloth diaper on her, got her clothes back on, and got her back into bed.
Notice the complete absence of mention of getting the plastic pants back on her? Yep. So of course a couple hours later, she was wet again. REALLY wet. Diaper, clothes, blankets, sheets, everything. Mom had to get up and change it ALL. During this, Robyn looked up at her from the changing table, and said her first sentence. "I was WET!" Mom looked down at her and said something like "Yes, you were!" and continued. (Or so the family story goes. I'm sure I blissfully slept through all of this.)
So last night Maggie woke up in the wee hours, wet and crying. I asked Karl to go pick her up from the changing table. I'm suffering from pregnancy sciatica pretty badly, and trying to avoid picking her up when possible, it hurts. So he picked her up, and I asked him to check her diaper, and he went to change her. Shortly he handed her to me in bed, to for me to cuddle her back to sleep. I said something about "say thank you, Daddy, for the nice clean dry diaper," and went to pat her diaper-covered bottom.
Except it wasn't. He'd handed Maggie to me with the bottom snaps of her onesie unfastened, and no diaper at all. It was a very bare baby bottom.
I'm glad I'd patted. THAT would have been quite a mess.
I got SleepyKarl to hand me another diaper, and got it on her in the bed and got her clothes fastened before cuddling her back to sleep.
