celticdragonfly: (Knitting for dummies - Jayne)

After doing the math on the results of the last swatch, I did another swatch on size 8 needles, 5 mm. The math had said I'd need around 4.9 mm, so this seemed a good idea.

After finally doing a big enough swatch, I find out that I now have 22 stitches per inch, where I should have 20. Too much. A result of 5.5 spi instead of 5 spi. This says my knitting is still too tight for gauge, and I need a bigger needle.

Then there's the row gauge - it should be 32 rows per 4 inches. Instead, it's 27 rows per 4 inches. Too little. This says my knitting is too loose for gauge, and I need smaller needles.

I don't actually bang my head on the wall for this sort of thing, but I certainly think about it.

[livejournal.com profile] bkseiver was of the impression that this is close enough. She may be right. Gah.

Knitting IS stretchy.
and Maggie IS growing.

If it's not supposed to be a surprise, you can always check the length by just holding it up to her.
