How do people FIND babysitters?

I'm trying to find one, really I am. I've asked the church secretary for advice. I've emailed the Sunday school leader and the nursery lady (twin sisers) who both actually live in Saginaw, asking if they know of anybody. I'm not sure what else to do. Wondering if it's a good idea to just call, say, the local Methodist church and see if they know of any teens wanting to babysit locally. A bit nervous at the idea of someone we don't know.

I really, really, really need a babysitter for this Saturday evening, and want to find ones for regular work.

I pinged my friend who lives up your way. He's going to ask his wife when he gets home and relay any leads to me. I'll send them on if he comes up with anything.

Do you know any school teachers in your area? Might one of K's coworkers have a spouse who is a teacher? Is there a local craigslist chapter or someplace like that which could provide additional leads?

Also - and this is probably a long shot - is it possible to find out from the local Red Cross, Girl Scout, or Campfire chapters if they've taught any babysitting classes? I remember taking such, and getting RC certification as a young teen. If they've taught such classes, maybe they have lists of folks who've taken them, who might be willing to be contacted. If not, imo they *should*, and you could certainly suggest it.

Anyway - good luck!

I know one school teacher in the area - she's also the Sunday school director of our church right now, and her twin is the nursery lady. I've emailed them asking for help, haven't heard back. I don't think Karl knows any of his coworkers that well, but I'll ask. I do know one Girl Scout teen from church, but she lives a bit far. I am wondering if I should call and ask if she'd be interested anyway.

Our local YMCA has such a program--you might want to check with yours.

My son has done babysitting. He's out in the West Fort Worth area. He might be able to save your Saturday night. He was nanny for two little girls (at the house where he lives) and has always been great around kids. He's a little odd looking nowadays, but he's a great guy.

Do you want me to check with him?

Sure. Interesting bit of mental gear shifting - our mental images of him involve battle axes and fire juggling!

I just got a call back from him and he has to decline. I'm very sorry to have to raise your hopes and dash them.

Laura, I don't know if Saginaw has this program, but here the local fire dept. has a safety program for high schoolers who want to babysit. They get some sort of certificate and here the high school guidance dept. has a list of those who have been thru the program. Hope it helps. Love, Maggie

Baby Sitters

Contact the local Red Cross. Some chapters have classes for Baby Sitters. By the time the student finshed the class, they not only have a basic knowledge of first aid, but also know how to handle non-health realted emergencies and have some experience with children.

Mind, I doubt they will just give you a class list of former students, but ask if they have any former students they would recommend.

Check with your Fire Department. Sometimes they have classes for students on Baby Sitting, sometimes they have an Explorer post associated with them that has yooung men and women with first aid cards who are willing to baby sit to pick up some spending money.

Check with the Senior Center, see if they know of any older women who are willing tomake a fewww buck to supplement their normal sources of income with a bit of baby sitting.

No, I wasn't blessed with children that needed baby sitting, but I took my most recent first aid course at a fire station advertizing a Baby Sitting class that included a ifrst Aid Card, just had another woman in my van pool talking about her son who just completed a Red Cross Baby sitting Class and have aneighbor who takes in kids for a couple of hours some afternoons.

I remember when Sharon's entire 6th-grade basketball team signed up to take the local Red Cross's babysitting course. If the R.C. won't give out actual class member names, maybe they'd share the names of the adults who organized each group.
