Sushi

So last night I finally tried sushi. We went out to have dinner at Tokyo Steakhouse, where we'd eaten before, but in addition to the table-cooked stuff, got sushi appetizers. Two kinds, tuna rolls and a salmon sushi thing. I was feeling experimental. I had expected to stay far away from the wasabi, but Miles mixed a very small amount of it in with a lot of soy sauce, and had me try that. That was okay, just like really intense soy sauce. With the tuna roll, I didn't like the taste or texture of the seaweed, and didn't like the taste of the raw tuna. Just had one bit of those. For the salmon, the taste was okay, but the texture wasn't something I liked. I tried the whole thing, and I did like it better with the wasabi-soy sauce mixture, but I did eventually decide, no, I don't care for it.

But I tried it!

try a california roll (seaweed on the inside of the rice, easier to handle), or eel (which is cooked and has a sweet brown sauce). if the seaweed really doesn't agree with you, maybe you need just nagiri(sp?)... fish on rice, instead of a roll, but then there's the sneaky dollop of wasabi to glue the fish onto the rice.

:>

you should also check out Sushi Yama, if you're ever over in Dallas. it's right next to TI on Forest, and where all the TI Orientals go for lunch, etc. it's been my fav for a decade.

*blinks* How weird. In California, all the California Rolls I've encountered have all been called such because they had green death avocado in it, but were otherwise normal.

On the other paw, Texas was the first place I ever had a "Louisiana Roll" before.

I had tried a bite of california roll once.

And - well, I've tried it now, and I think I'm done. Texture is a REALLY big deal for me with food, and the texture was just too unappealing for me.

My standard rule of thumb on food selection -

At least you tried it, which is a plus. :-)

No, it's not for everyone though.

Thank God! I thought I was the only person on the face of the planet who didn't like sushi.

Hey, I'm glad you finally tried it! Although, ISTR giving you a piece of my california roll once. You weren't wild about that, either. :) At least now you can cross it off your list.

No, I wasn't - but I am trying to be more adventuresome about food and such, and trying to give things a fair trial. One piece isn't really a fair trial. But I think I have given it that now.
